Food Forests
The City installed two food forest demonstration sites in 2025 to provide publicly accessible, edible landscapes in Saskatoon. Leif Erickson Park and Boughton Park were selected as the highest priority sites, based on criteria including land availability and neighbourhood-level food insecurity.
Plants on site are still being established. Food Forests will be open to the public in spring 2028. Stay tuned!

Phases
Irrigation & Naturalization Study
From June - August 2023, the City of Saskatoon worked with a consultant to audit 21 parks to identify opportunities to optimize irrigation, reduce irrigated area and transition to naturalized landscaping. The goal was to improve the City's water use and increase resilience to climate change.
After reviewing the results of the audit, Boughton Park and Leif Erickson Park were identified to receive additional park upgrades including irrigation and naturalization improvements and other enhancements such as new pathways, site furniture, and tree planting. The coordination of the food forest project with additional park enhancements reduced construction impacts, saved time and money by reducing the number of contracts, consolidated design and installation work, and optimized the use of the federal Natural Infrastructure Fund grant funding.
